DUFC ladies through to the semi finals of the BUCS trophy!!

Today DUFC ladies team had a quarter final BUCS match against Edinburgh B team

DUFC ladies won 135:79 and are now through to the semi finals for the BUCS trophy!

the weapon breakdown was:

Foil: Dundee A 45: 23 Edinburgh B
Epee: Dundee A 45:31 Edinburgh B
Sabre: Dundee A 45:25 Edinburgh B

The semi final match will take place on wednesday the 22nd of february 2012 in Dundee.

DUFC Ladies beat St.Andrews in the last 16 of the BUCS trophy

On wednesday the 30th DUFC Ladies A team beat st.Andrews ladies in the last 16 of the BUCS trophy: DUFC Ladies are now through to the Quarter finals!

The result was:

Dundee 135: 80 St.Andrews

Sabre: 45:35

Epee: 45:25

Foil 45:20

Welldone to all who fenced, especially Mhairi De Sainte Croix who fenced all 3 weapons for the team.

Welsh Open 2011

Sadly, since the club had to cancel our trip to the Welsh Open, only two of our members managed to attend.

David Soto entered Mens Sabre and came 30th in the event.

Amy Duffus entered Womens Epee and came 37th.

Huge congratulations to them both on their performance!

Training Weekend with Paul Donaldson

The fencing club were fortunate to offer the experience of Mr Paul Donaldson to lead a training day, with our club coach Richard assisting. Paul is a coach with many years full time coaching experience in Hamburg, having competed for Scotland for over 10 years and is the current German veterans sabre coach.

The aim of the weekend was to provide a simple framework which provides an answer to the opponent in a variety of forms from this one model. As simple as 1, 2, 3 4.

The first day was focused on simple technique of timing each component of a step lunge. Although perhaps not the most physically challenging, having the discipline and control over the fencing action requires a good portion of mental capability. This was expanded to deal with several scenarios faced in a fight, both in attack and defence.

The second day focused on gelling this framework with the preparation to the attack, this meant footwork. Lots of it!

Here the translation of exercises the day before was presented in a format used on piste, challenging how good (or bad) your control over the action was.

When we weren’t training hard, we were having a nice lunch, playing rugby and also discussing changes to the presiding between the different weapons. The latter in particular was particularly useful in understanding why hits are given, and also will no doubt improve presiding within the club.

Everyone benefitted from Paul and Richard’s wealth of experience and ideas, and hopefully it will pay off at the M8 open and beyond.

BUCS knockout match against Durham B

On Wednesday the 9th of november, the DUFC Ladies 1st team had a BUCS trophy knockout match against Durham B team.

DUFC Ladies won 130-73 qualifying us to the next round

The weapon breakdown is:

Sabre 40-45

Foil 45-3

Epee 45-25

Our next match is aginst St. Andrews on Wednesday the 30th of November. Watch this space!

BUCS Qualifiers Results

The weekend of the 29th-30th of october was BUCS qualifiers, a competition open to the top 6 ranked Scottish teams in the Scottish conference (Men’s and Women’s) from last years qualifiers, and is to qualify for knockouts next year. DUFC entered 2 teams; a Women’s A team and a Women’s B team. Both teams performed really well, especially the B team as for 3 out of 4 of them, it was their first ever team match.

The results were as follows;

Women’s A team:

132-111 against Aberdeen

111-122 against Glasgow

123-117 against St. Andrews

135-107 against Edinburgh B

135-50 against Dundee B

Overall position at qualifiers for the A team was 1st out of the 6 teams entered, qualifying them for championship knockouts next year.

Women’s B team:

90-135 against Aberdeen

61-135 against Glasgow

50-135 against Dundee A

74-135 against St.Andrews

91-135 against Edinburgh

Overall position for the B team was 6th, however they all fenced really well and thouroughly enjoyed the weekend.
